No Identity Crisis Here

From my side bar you can tell that Toby Logsdon, founder and Bible Teacher of Biblestudypodcasts.org is my Son-in -Love. But I want you to know how very proud and honored I am to call him SON.

It fills my heart with JOY to hear him preach and teach God's TRUTH from his wealth of wisdom and understanding of the BIBLE.

Fifty some years ago...my own father began his first pastorate in a small Kansas town. It blesses my soul, that more than a generation later...I am experiencing Toby, together with my daughter, and their two children continuing this spiritual heritage that I was born into. I was 5 days old when the family made the move from Kansas to Oklahoma for dad to go to college so he could step into God's calling on his life.

Years before Dad's calling...my great great uncle "Ulysses Grant" T. was a 'circuit rider' preacher.... :) Yeah, he rode a horse to the distant parishes throughout the land. Is that just way cool :) I'm told he was a 'power packed' preacher...and blessed with a spiritual confidence that facilitated the Holy Spirit's work of opening wide the hearts of men.

Dad tells the story of 2 men marching into the church one Sunday as Ulysses was preparing to preach...they had a rope...intending to hang him! Ulysses dared anyone to step one foot on the platform where he was standing. He said.... "the Lord will strike you dead!" The church fell silent, as the two men turned and walked right out of the front door, that they had just came through - dragging their rope behind them! (dragging their tails behind them :) - Ulysses knew that as a christian he was the HEAD and not the TAIL :)

"If you listen to these commands of the LORD your God and carefully obey them, the LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always have the upper hand. " Deu 28:13

I have inherited my great-great uncle Ulysses' old black leather satchel packed full of neatly organized handwritten sermons - some typed - but all organized and easily read....what a treasured heritage!

Is it any wonder why I too have come to know this Jesus as my Lord and KING? This wealth of spiritual HERITAGE became my personal INHERITANCE when I stepped into my calling as daughter of the Most High King....and now Warrior Bride of My Beloved King!

Tomorrow, Feb 6 - My Son-in-Love, Toby, will deliver his 2nd sermon as the new senior pastor of Lynnwood Evangelical Free Church in Lynnwood WA . His first sermon was heard by a full house, I'm told - regular attendees as well as new people and people that hadn't come in a while. The congregation is excited to have a full time pastor again. And Toby and the family are just as eager to join them.

I'm linking to his first sermon "The Identity Factor: Who Am I?" for anyone interested. Toby's message comes from Matthew 16:13-18 - as he shares how our identity changes when we recognize and respond to Jesus' identity.

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" "Well," they replied, "some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets." Then he asked them, "Who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Now I say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it." Matt 16:13-18 NLT

You can find Toby's future sermons at www.Lynnwoodefc.org

Who do you say that you are?

And are you really who you say you are?

A whole world is watching and reading our open book.....what do they see?

We are a reflection of what lies beneath the skin...

Do we reflect JESUS?

Does His Glory shine from within our body, mind, and spirit?

Do we light up the darkness when we walk into a room - just by His Presence in us?

Who do YOU say that you are?

  1. Hi Patricia -

I was elated to hear from you. I have been coming here regularly to see if there was a new post.

When I saw your comment on my blog, my eyes lit up! I rushed over here.

It is understandable that you had priorities...but I sure am glad that our Lord put you on to blog today!

Great news about your son-in-law and his family. I am going to make a note to listen.

Wow! praise GOD that your father was a pastor.

I love this that you expressed, "Do we light up the darkness when we walk into a room -just by His Presence in us?"

Yes, Patrina, it is so important that we DO the Word...

Note: When you get some free moments, please read my post titled, "CIRCUS CHANGE" that was posted yesterday. It is just below what you read today.

As for the continuation of today's post, I will have it on within about three days, I expect...unless our Lord indicates otherwise.

Thank you, Patrina, for your consideration.

Now I am going to go answer your comment on my blog.

  2. Oh! Patrina - please forgive me - I noticed too late that I greeted you in my earlier comment here as Patricia. Earlier I had e-mailed my friend Patricia and I mistakenly typed her name in my greeting to you here earlier.

Notice, though, later in my comment to you, I did use your correct name.

I'm so sorry for the error, PATRINA!

  16. What an enjoyable post. I hardly know where to start with my comments!!

I just love that you inherited all those sermons from Ulysses! Patrina, maybe you could print some excerpts from them sometime!

Congrats to Toby - it sounds like his church is VERY fortunate to have him. He will be a blessing.

Who am I? I think that at this point in my life, I am more "me" than I've ever been - because I am following hard after Jesus - and finding my identity in my risen Lord.

I want to decrease, so He can increase!

Thanks for this, Patrina - I stand and say with Peter, "You are the Messiah, the Son of Living God." And in Him, I have found my true self.

    GOD BLESS!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am SO GLAD to see you back Patrina! :)

And as usual, so much to digest in your words tonight.

Evangelical Free Church... that brings back a host of memories. My dad preached at so many E.V.Free churches as we grew up!

I hope you are all settled in, and I know it's a joy to have your pastor right in your family. We have one of those too, and we are blessed.

How is your dad doing? I assume he made the move okay.

I'm just happy to 'see' you again!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sharon... my 'cowgirl' buddy :)

    I loved your last lines:

"I stand and say with Peter, "You are the Messiah, the Son of Living God." And in Him, I have found my true self."

Me too...in Him I stand! I am who I am because of HIM in me!

hugs to you, cowgirl - your profile icon makes me feel at home. I have 5 cowgirls hats and 7 pairs of cowgirl boots - used to have 9 - but I have completely worn two pair out! Most of the others are getting to that point too. I used to wear them everyday - even to work :)

  19. Sonja

Thanks for your warm welcome back. It tickled my heart strings to see your face :)

But I am far from 'settled'. I am still in AR. - without my kids - in my now empty house - awaiting all the paperwork and red tape to move dad to LTC. He is still with me. I had hoped it would be a quicker turn around - I may be in this situation til spring....

But I know that spring is coming and so I continue to face each new day with the HOPE of a new season.

God is good - He is faithful - He is my strength - my JOY - my song.

So good to connect with you tonight - stay warm! It's cold in AR too.

  22. Greetings dear Patrina,

A few days you came and visited my blog, thank you for having done so.

I was delighted by reading of your family and its history, especially your son, of whom I know you are very proud, as he walks in the footsteps of your father. As parents all we can do is give our children a good education and guidance and hope that they make the right decisions along the way. It seems your son has.

My presence on the Internet has been limited indeed. After completing cardiovascular rehab, I returned fie weeks later for another extended stay, which ended in mid-December. Now I am hoping to refocus my activities that have lain abandoned all last year, along with duties around the house.

I have had a different kind of Internet presence since September of last year, focusing my attentions on my feline companion of seventeen years, as I created a blog just for her. You can reach it by clicking n her picture on my blog if you like.

Thank you Patrina for thinking of me and for those very special words and prayers of yours. You are indeed a precious person.

My your path be always be safe and filled with sunshine,

I do hope you give Toby a listen. It would bless my heart to know you have heard him preach. He's quite funny in his delivery - very relaxed. God is growing him into His humble servant -

You bless me with your sister relationship - I just love it that you two are so close and how you truly enjoy each other's company!...and horses :)

  31. Tisha dear FRIEND

awww - I appreciate your friendship too - all the way from Nigeria! I just love my Nigerian buddies!!!

I call myself 'warrior bride' because I am dressed and ready to meet Him - my bridegroom - my beloved! 'Warrior' because I fight the good fight with Him in His end-time army! He is my commander and chief! I wear boots cause frankly - I do wear cowgirl boots! But I'm in combat for the lost and troubled souls that He brings into my territory... for intercessory prayer. I am a prayer warrior!

When a fellow blogger called me a 'princess warrior' - it sounded right on!

But it quickly evolved to 'warrior bride in boots' because of all the warrior princess icons I found when I did a web search for such. All of them were of sexy - sensual young chics wielding a huge sword!

That just wasn't me - In no way shape or form - was that me :) In fact, I didn't even want to be associated with that term anymore - that's when the Lord gave me the new name 'warrior bride in boots'.

I'm not married yet - He's not come for me yet. But I am His bride in waiting! Yes I am!

So, I am glad that I have helped you see yourself as a bit more mature than a 'princess bride'.

We no longer are satisfied with mere milk! I crave more meat!

Glad to help you see who you are in Christ - at this stage of your developement with HIM.

So...My dear Tisha - warrior bride of the Beloved KING!!! Take your rightful place and stand ready and TRUE!

    God bless you, friend

Actually, I'm not so much in a whirlwind as I was in Jan. The kids have left and things are sort of at a stand still awaiting the next step. Pray that the turn around is completed soon. I am so ready for my next season! BRING it ON! :)

The 2 feet of snow today was kind of a whirlwind though... Lots of bird pictures... can't find my car yet - except for the side view mirror peeking out of the blanket of white.

awwww...the joy of it all - much snow to shovel in the next few days :)

Yes yes! every choice we make impacts another generation for eternity.

I liked it that you said this spiritual heritage - has followed the bloodline - to my own grandchildren. OHhhhh yes! I do have two grandchildren influenced by this ministry - don't I? Hard as it was to be raised in a preacher's family, I am definitely standing my post in a prayer covering....but I know the richness of the experience - for years to come - for my two grand children that find themselves PK's - like their granny before them. haha.

Rich indeed. This granny has their trust... they will be OK. They can talk to me about anything. I'll be there for them.

The 'Body' of Christ has lost their identity 'in the church' - rather than body 'in Jesus Christ'. We are the church - we are His ministry tool - we are His hands and feet - His mouth piece - His heart. As Toby says in this sermon - we don't GO to church - we ARE the church!

He is always looking for an open heart - to cooperate with His plan - His way - and in His time.

Again... God continue to bless you, your family ... and your/HIS camera,Steve.

HUGS in cyberspace - for now :)

  62. Michelle,

I noticed your follow - but as with Sally, I have no place to reciprocate the neighborly gesture. So,I will just take the time today to welcome you to the bridge. I appreciate your visit and your vote of confidence in the words I share here.

    God bless you Michelle

  64. Dear Patrina ~ Thank you for sweetly stopping by and visiting me at *my place* and for your encouraging words...and for your prayers! What a blessing it is to be part of the family of God! HE is wonderful!! How precious this post is!! I *love* that you have a travelling preacher in your heritage and that you have his notes and sermons and Bible!! Treasures to be sure! What a blessing it is that your family is rich in their Christian heritage...how precious to see your grandchildren being raised to know and love the LORD Jesus Christ! I am so happy for you.

    In His Love,
    Camille

  65. Dear Patrina,

Though I had previously commented her before, it seems I was drawn back to this post as I was looking through your site. I guess it was meant to be.

As I read it once again I wish now to reflect upon a treasure that you hold in your hands, the handwritten and typed sermons from Ulysses Grant.

Since you have read 'Family Secrets' you know the value I place on family, our connection to the past and the importance to keep alive the history of ones heritage and with these papers and the satchel you have indeed a tangible link. A link that is real for your children and your children's children. This is most precious and I know you will keep it pristine and safe so that it can be handed down generations after generations, along with the story of the two men and the rope.

Thank you for your presence and continued support.

I wish you all the best,
    Egmont

  66. Awww, Egmont,

Always nice to have you visit. You're kind words in your comment at your place, touched me deeply :)

YES YES! You bet I will keep it dear to my heart. Some have suggested that I donate it to the museum in the small town where he retired in KS. Maybe someday. But for now. I have a treasure beyond words - and it will remain a treasured possession.

thank you again for taking the time to visit and let me know that you were here.

    Blessings
